Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital

Extending Hospital's work - The Harar Outreach Centre.

Fistula Hospital is now reaching more patients in remote areas

The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital has opened four outreach centres across Ethiopia. Ethiopiaid supports the Harar centre, which opened its doors in 2008. We were visiting the new centre when its first patient arrived. An obstructed labour, lasting four days, had left her incontinent and with a still-born baby. She was given surgery to repair the fistula and physiotherapy to help her recover her strength. Finally she was given a new dress - a gift from the hospital - which she could wear when to return home to restart her life.

Patients are referred to the centre by doctors working in hospitals or private clinics. Patients who have had treatment are also now spreading the word. The centre's public health officer visits local areas to locate patients and raise awareness about avoiding fistula through good midwifery practice. Surgical staff visit provincial hospitals and remote villages with equipment to perform operations on site. They teach local doctors and educate villagers about harmful traditional practices and the importance of proper medical care during childbirth.
